Cruise Ships Jobs – Is Finding A Job On A Cruise Ship For You? Dec 31

The strength of the cruise industry is the main reason why many people find a job on a cruise ship very appealing. There has been an increase in cruise ship jobs in the last decade.

Over the last six years, more than 85,000 cruise ship jobs have been newly created to cater to the needs of running and maintaining a cruise line. In the next three years, a reported 26,000 more cruise ship employment opportunities will be produced. However, you may find a job on cruise ship not suitable for you after all. It is best to review the pros and cons of a cruise ship job before applying for one.

A job on a cruise ship isn´t all fun in the sun as others think. For one, you have to deal with homesickness, as most cruise lines require a contract that will only allow you to go home after every 2 to 3 months at sea. You might also have to deal with sea sickness.

Also, you won´t get to enjoy the perks that passengers have – lounging by the pool is off-limits, food choices are limited, room accommodations are tough and you´ll have to share with one or more roommates, and free time is often cut.

Of course, there are advantages to the job. Since you have free lodging and food, laundry service, and medical care, you can save your pay. Oftentimes, your family and friends can get discounted cruises. Most importantly, you get to travel, meet new people, and learn other cultures.

Of course, the pay salary of most cruise ship jobs is significantly higher than equivalent jobs on land. Plus, you get to travel to different ports and you do get some rest and relaxation at ports of call.

If you think you can handle it, then finding a job on a cruise ship now can be both financially rewarding and fun.

Choose the Right Knife for Camping Dec 31

Knife Design Philosophy

If you have ever watched any of the Bear Grylls 'Born Survivor' TV series or Ray Mears 'Extreme Survival' you will doubtless have noticed how both Bear and Ray always carry a good quality knife.

Knives have been used since the stone age when man made remarkably effective and sharp cutting tools from flint and obsidian. The knife is both a practical tool and a very effective weapon. They've received a lot of bad press lately due to the frequency of violent knife crimes on our streets.

But knives are not bad, just some of the people who carry them. They are practical and essential tools that, in the outdoors or a survival situation, you would be glad to have.

When camping out a knife can be used in any number of ways including:

  • Cutting branches for fire wood
  • Preparing kindling
  • Cutting rope or string
  • Making tent pegs
  • Skinning rabbits
  • Preparing food
  • Almost everything…

It's always a good idea to select the most suitable knife for the job. The swiss-army knife is a good example of a practical, versatile knife that comes in a variety of models with a bewildering selection of tools for almost any situation. While the variety of tools provided by a Swiss Army knife can be appealing a good, strong, sharp knife blade is the essential requirement.

Knives that are good for camping don't necessarily need to be particularly large. Ideally the knife should have a high carbon steel steel blade that will not corrode and will hold and good sharp edge. Your selected knife may have a fixed or folding blade. Knives with folding blades should ideally lock when the blade is exposed to prevent accidents. The knife should provide an appropriate handle that is comfortable in your hand. The knife blade should have a good sharp point and the handle may have a strong rear bolster (the bit at the end of the handle) which can be used for hammering or cracking nuts.

If you favour a fixed blade knife it will need a suitable sheath that, ideally, you can mount on your belt. You will need a whetstone to keep the blade sharp. For fishing and hunting, you may like to use a knife that has a partially serrated edge, ideal for cutting through bone.

Whatever you choose a knife is an essential part of your camping equipment. While you may be arrested for carrying one in the city streets you would be a fool to go camping without one.

Wave Goodbye to Jet Lag Dec 31

Jet lag, for those who don’t know, is the effect of travelling between time zones upsetting ones circadian rhythms. It is defined as:

“A physiological condition which is a consequence of alterations to circadian rhythms”

The effects of jet lag can vary. Some people suffer a few days of restless sleep whereas others can experience loss in appetite, headaches, constipation, anxiety and dizziness. Luckiliy there are several ways in which jet lag can be alleviated and the effects alleviated. Here are a few suggestions:

Tasimelteon: This is a new drug developed by Elizabeth Klerman of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston along with researchers from Vanda Pharmaceuticals, Maryland. Tests have shown that those taking the drug found it easier to get to sleep than those who had not taken the drug. It is understood that Tasimeteon stimulates the effects of Melatonin, the hormone known to be responsible for regulating sleep.

Melatonin: The hormone Melatonin is now a popular remedy for sleep related problems. Melatonin supplements can be purchased (in the United States) without a prescription. Melatonin research has presented a clear association with sleep and supplements that provide 0.1 to 0.5 milligrams of the hormone can be all that is required to help you settle into sleep.

Fasting: Minimising the amount of food you consume before embarking on your flight can help lessen the effects of jet lag. Studies have shown that, when food is scarce, the normal biological clock may be overridden. A period of fasting, for about 16 hours before taking a flight, should be enough to switch the new biological clock into action and alleviate the effects of jet lag.

Orange Tinted Sun-glasses: It has long been known that Melatonin secretion in humans can be stimulated by light. Blue light has been found to provoke a decrease in Melatonin production. Its therefore reasonable to expect that wearing orange tinted sunglasses will encourage Melatonin secretion.

Toe Scrunching:
Some travellers have reported that spending a few minutes tightly curling their toes while standing on a carpet or towel, just before going to bed, has a beneficial effect on jet lag. Some have reported that stretching and exercising in this way for between 2 and 5 minutes has had an immediate beneficial effect on their ability to get off to sleep.

A Cheap Vegas Travel Is Just As Enjoyable Dec 31

Vegas shows

You can gamble at a Las Vegas casino, stay at a Las Vegas hotel and purchase Las Vegas show tickets all for less than $100. There is, in fact, so much to do in Las Vegas Nevada for free that you can keep yourself entertained for a week straight without spending a dime. You can take the vacation you’ve always dreamt of without feeling guilty afterwards! Whether you’re looking for a cheap meal, a cheap hotel or a cheap show, you will find it all with a little bit of Vegas travel research.

Of course, cheap Vegas travel involves having a place to stay. Las Vegas hotels that offer consistently lower room rates and are located right on the Las Vegas Strip include Harrah’s, Imperial Palace, Bill’s Gambling Hall, Flamingo, The Sahara, The Stratosphere and Bally’s. You may also look into some off-strip hotel resorts for some Vegas Nevada rest and relaxation. If you book directly through the hotel of your choice, then you can usually find special deals and promotions. For example, did you know you can stay at The Mirage for as little as $77/night? Chef Paul at The Wynn Hotel also has an offer where guests can stay a night and gain a $100-$200 dining credit for just $199. MGM Grand has a family-friendly deal for $79 per night that includes a pair of free drinks by the pool, as well as a $25 credit toward entertainment or dining. The Monte Carlo offers spa, golf and dining credits with a $69/night stay. New York-New York and Mandalay Bay also have a number of offers to make your Vegas vacation package more memorable. For a full list of hot deals that are available right now, visit http://govegas.about.com/od/hoteldeals/las_vegas_hotel_deals_and_promotions.htm.

The beauty of traveling to Vegas is the amount of free attractions and Las Vegas shows that are available. At The Bellagio Hotel, there is a magnificent indoor conservatory and an impressive outdoor “dancing fountain” show that is choreographed to music every 15-30 minutes. Similarly, the 54-foot-high volcano erupts at The Mirage every night, which is an impressive sight. The Sirens Battle at Treasure Island is good eye-candy for guys and may be cool for little ones, but will undoubtedly disappoint your “Pirates of the Caribbean” loving teen.

You can check out the lion display at MGM Grand and the flamingos at The Flamingo Hotel at no cost. Twelve million lights shine on Fremont Street, with a special display every 30 minutes. Circus Circus has acts every half hour as well, with hire wire walkers, clowns and magicians touring the building. Perhaps the best free Vegas strip show is the Masquerade in the Sky at The Rio, where sky-high dancers and pulsating music meet. Sci-fi loving, techno music fans will love that there’s no cover to get into Mandalay Bay’s Eyecandy Sound Lounge & Bar.

You may have heard that you can score free alcohol while gambling in any Las Vegas casino. Hello, that’s part of what makes Vegas travel so enticing! Even though the drinks are free, it is customary to tip the waitress $1, although if you tip $2 or more, you can rest assured you’ll get more free drinks than usual. If you want to save money, then try to avoid the clubs. Some good spots for hanging out and drinking lower-priced drinks include Canaval Court (Harrah’s), Margaritaville (Flamingo), Trader Vic’s (Miracle Mile Shops), ESPN Zone (New York-New York) and Slots of Fun. At Nine Fine Irishmen (New York-New York), you can find a pint of Guinness for $6 and The Bunkhouse in downtown Las Vegas is a cheap traveler’s bar just one block from the USA Hostel.

How to Plan Great Romantic Getaways Dec 31

For some of us, planning a romantic getaway is second nature. Looking for romantic venues, making reservations, and thinking up romantic ideas may be easy for some, but for most of us, arranging enjoyable romantic getaways can be a daunting task. Where does one start? Maybe you are already picturing a tropical location, filled with sand, surf, and expensive chilled drinks. Or maybe you are looking for something more rustic, like a log cabin to reconnect with nature and your significant other.

Regardless of what you already have in mind, here are some tips that you’ll need in order to ensure that your romantic getaway is fun and memorable.

The first thing is to have a budget in mind. It’s too easy these days to just swipe everything on to one’s credit card and forget about it, but remember that those bills will be waiting for you once you get back. Let’s be realistic. No one wants to have to be paying off their romantic getaway for months or even years after the fact!  So try to be both reasonable and modest when planning your getaway.

Next, it’s time to communicate with your partner and ask yourselves what you both are expecting on your romantic getaway. This is a point that many couples miss, and often leads to underwhelming romantic getaways. For example, you may prefer the bright lights of the city while your partner craves to be by the countryside for some fresh air. You might be expecting to go out and paint the town red, while your partner is just looking to lounge around in front of the television.

If there is this kind of disparity in both your expectations, it makes enjoying your romantic getaway infinitely more difficult. The lesson to take away is to be prepared to have some open and honest communication with your significant other and make some compromises. Remember that romantic getaways are about both of you.

Now that you know your budget and what both of you wants to do on your romantic getaway, it’s time to narrow down your options. With your budget in mind, is there something local that will meet your needs? Remember that you can also have a great time with several affordable options, such as a nearby lake resort or even a campground. You’d be surprised how romantic a well-planned camping trip can be! In addition, activities such as hiking, horseback riding, or biking can be incredibly romantic as well.

If you’re more into the sun and beaches of a tropical location, considering the beaches of Miami or Los Angeles could save you a bundle of cash compared to Maui or the Bahamas. In today’s economy, it would be a good idea to consider it as air travel alone would generally be much less expensive. Also consider your accommodations for your romantic getaway. Cabin resorts have really improved over the years and even cater to couples and honeymooners. They often offer many of the amenities and luxury of hotels, but are generally a lot cheaper. A bed and breakfast is also an affordable romantic option. If you spend some time to look around, you’ll have a wonderful time, and your bank account will thank you.

Being romantic does take work for most of us, and while daunting at first, there are some excellent resources available at Ideal Romantic Getaways (www.idealromanticgetaways.com), which offers more great tips and ideas on planning that perfect romantic getaway.

Why You Should Travel Now Dec 31

Everyone dreams of traveling but most people don’t do it. Fear keeps most people from traveling. When I first went away in 2006, people always wished they could do what I was doing. For some people it is easy to just jump ship and travel. We have it in us all along and we just need a gentle nudge. I went to Thailand before I quit my job. For others it is a lot harder. They are more tied down, more afraid, more uncertain. They want to do it but, instead the nudge I needed, they need a full on push.

If you are looking for reason, here aremgood reasons to travel around the world:

There’s a recession. With the world economy in a tailspin and companies slashing jobs, there is a lot of economic uncertainty in the world. Avoid it all. Go travel. If you quit your job, sell your stuff and travel, you won’t have to worry about it. In fact, prices are dropping as the tourist industry tries harder to get people to go overseas. Return home when you know you have a job again. Let others worry while you go out and have fun.

You meet so many people. There is not a day that doesn’t go by where you don’t meet people from all over the world doing the same thing you are. You’ll meet locals who will take you around and open their homes and city to you. What more can you ask for in life than meeting wonderful people and creating a network of friends that encompasses the globe.

It’s better than working. Working is work. Sitting behind a desk for eight hours, commuting to work, worrying about bosses and reports is not our idea of a good time. Let’s face it, between worrying about next month’s budget or sitting on a beach in Asia, everyone would choose the beach. Why are you working?

You learn about other cultures. The world is a big place and globalization has made it much more complex and interconnected. You’ll never begin to understand all the other players in the world or why people do what they do by sitting at home. Traveling will teach you about other cultures and people and make them more than just a face on the news.

You learn about yourself. Travel helps you figure out what makes you you and what you really like or dislike. You learn to be independent. You have to adapt to your surroundings, meet other people, make your own decisions, and plan your life. You’ll make everyone jealous. Let’s face it- everyone wants to travel the world but few people do. Do it and make everyone at home jealous of you, your stories, and your photos. While they work all day, you explore the world.

Because, like Yoda said, do or do not. Why spend your life thinking about what might be when you can just do it. It’s not that hard to travel you just have to have the will to do it. Don’t live life with regrets- get up and get going. NO ONE ever regrets a trip like this. NO ONE. T

raveling around the world is a life changing experience. There’s no reason not to go. There is no big secret on why to go. Just go. Even if it’s for a week, or a month, or a year. See the world. You only get one chance [at life]. Make it worthwhile.

Mummy, are we home yet? Dec 31

With over 200 hundred miles yet to travel, this question from the little darlings in the back can irritate the nerves unless you take some corrective.
Before we hit the highway, the younger ones were already fidgeting.  And, despite the fact that the holiday home was still four hours away, the question kept coming every five minutes. If there’s one thing that can upset the older children who have no choice but to be seated beside the wee brats, this is it
The last thing the weary driver needs as she gives her full attention to the busy lanes, is someone distracting her.

Distractions are a must but not for the driver- for the kids.
I Spy with my little eye is one such game that will keep them occupied for a short while well, that is providing everyone is concentrating.

On one occasion my star performer spied the steering wheel and her clue was ws and of course we all thought this meant windscreen. But windscreen it wasn’t and many miles later nobody got the answer. And what do you know, she had mistakenly spelt steering wheel the wrong way around She was not too popular for a while after that.
What happens when everyone gets tired of this game? One option is to play Charades, and this can be good fun for a while too.
So, what is the long term solution to prevent four energetic kids from getting bored?

I read an article about audio books on the internet which gave me some ideas. We had to dig a bit into our hard earned cash but it was worth it. We bought each of them an MP3 player, downloaded some children’s audiobooks from the net and as Shakespeare might say, ‘the rest is silence’.
The great thing about audiobooks is that you can load several of them onto each MP3 player so that there is enough material there for both journeys, there and back. Peace for hours for a small price.

The important thing to remember is not to download the same story on each iPod or MP3 player. Instead give them all something different so that they can swap them around eventually.
So, instead, invest a little in the MP3 players and get the kids help in the selection. MP3 players are not just for this trip.
It even makes sense to look ahead to the English curriculum of your local schools for inspiration. Huckleberry Finn seems to be an evergreen.
In years to come, it’s possible to turn idle time into productive time by listening to classic literature or foreign language audiobooks on the way to school.

There really is a very wide choice of titles now on audiobooks, for example, nursery rhymes, action and adventure, ghost stories, romance, animals etc…Enough to keep the entire family occupied

Facts About Lightweight Travel Trailers Dec 30

Airstream 23' FB Flying Cloud Travel Trailer

Many people who want to add a small camper to their pick up truck discover that there are very few lightweight travel trailers to choose from. The problem is not the diversity of models but the weight, since most of the existing designs are too heavy to get pulled by a car or a pick-up truck. A closer analysis of the market offer will show you that even the RV companies whether we are talking about rental agencies or dealers have shown little interest in purchasing lightweight travel trailers. The reasoning for such a sales policy is very simple: the demand is lower for such recreational vehicles, and therefore it is not profitable to keep them in stock.

The bathroom plumbing adds up quite a lot to the weight of the vehicle, particularly as the ceiling design has to be altered to. Therefore, with many lightweight travel trailers the bathroom is pretty basic or non existent. Four types of vehicles fall in the category of lightweight travel trailers: the teardrops, the fiberglass eggs, the ultra-lightweights and the pop-up tent trailers. Each of the models has its advantage and downside: thus, the pop-ups are suitable for warmer climates, the fiberglass ones have a specific smell inside because of the materials they are made of, and the teardrops have offer pretty little space.

The ultra-lightweight vehicles that generally have around 2,000 pounds could be the most convenient, but that very much depends on what the client aims at for both quality and use. Given the small size, the interior of lightweight travel trailers resembles a small or medium-sized bedroom in the best of cases, which is between 10 and 12 feet. Such lightweight travel trailers would do for a couple, but not a family. Manufacturers provide the models ready furnished with basic appliances including a stove and a microwave, with a very simple bathroom, with or without shower.

It is surprising to discover that there is little difference between the costs of new and used vehicles as the price ranges somewhere around $10,000 with all the included amenities. The manufacturing year and the technical inspection remain key points to check when you want to buy a second-hand recreational vehicle. If there is no dealer in your local area, check online for more comprehensive resources. Always go through updated databases, otherwise you may be looking at items that are no longer in stock.
