Scrambling - Hiking Safely In Rocky Terrain Jan 30

After scrambling to the the summit of Mount Bushnell, I sat on a boulder that was cracked down the middle. Five seconds after my usual summit photo of my bare feet hanging over the edge, the left half of my rock fell loose. I watched as it bounced down the mountainside. I took out my crackers and continued to watch. The rock, and the others it had collected along the way, stopped about 500 feet below. I’m glad I chose the right side of the rock to sit on.

Later, scrambling down from the top, I slipped. I got a bruised leg from one rock, and a gash on one hand from another - the one that kept me from tumbling down the mountainside. The irony was that I rarely ever have a bad slip when hiking and climbing, and I had just stopped a moment earlier to take some notes on “safe scrambling” for this article. I guess the first safety lesson is to concentrate on the task at hand and take your notes later.

Scrambling, according to one dictionary, is “an ambiguous term - somewhere between hill-walking and rock climbing.” It is a necessary part of hiking and backpacking in the mountains unless you are content to stick to the trails and always be looking up at the peaks. I’m not. I like to be looking down at everything from time to time. Since not all mountains have easy trails to the top, this sometimes means crossing long stretches of rock.

Of course, rock isn’t a problem by itself. Sometimes it is solid and sloped gently, so you can hike across it easily. Other times, as on Mount Bushnell, it is loose, and mixed with almost vertical stretches which require your hands as much as your feet. Here are some tips for making this kind of scrambling a little bit safer.

Scrambling Tips

1. Beware of pulling rocks loose. You can use the rocks above you to steady yourself on steep parts, but try not to put much weight on them unless absolutely necessary. Remember that when they come loose, you are below them. More than one hiker has pulled a rock down upon himself with fatal results.

2. Big is better. When crossing loose rocks, try to step on the larger ones. They are less likely to move, and when they do move, they usually do so more slowly.

3. Stay away from each other. If there are two or more in your group, don’t travel directly below each other on steep slopes. The rock that one person knocks loose will aim for the next in line. Keep some distance between you, and if ascending straight up, do so parallel to each other, ten feet or more apart.

4. Know your abilities. In particular, consider whether you’ll be able to climb down the rocks you are scrambling up. Down is always more dangerous and usually more difficult.

5. Head for the grass. If you have a choice of routes, stick to those where the rocks are mixed with patches of grass. They are usually anchored more solidly here.

6. Learn to read the rocks. With experience you’ll get a “feel” for which rocks are more likely to break loose, and which slopes are more easily climbed. Speed up this learning process by paying attention as you scramble, making rules as you go, like “these kind of boulders are slippery,” and “that type of rock breaks easily.”

7. Avoid wet rock. It’s bad enough to have every second rock you step on move under your foot, but it’s downright treacherous when they are slippery too. Wet usually equals slippery. Be aware of the surface of the rocks you are scrambling across, and whether it might rain before you get back down to the trail.

8. Use a walking stick If you’ll be doing a lot of scrambling, you may want to consider using a walking stick instead of trekking poles. When I consider the number of times my walking stick was wedged between rocks or holding my weight the other day, I’m not sure that a trekking pole would have survived. A good walking stick can help with balance, reduce knee-strain, and take a lot of abuse.

Safe Drinking Water - Six Tips For Backpacking Jan 28

On a day hike, safe drinking water isn’t an issue. You can carry what you need. But when backpacking, you will most likely be using chemical water purification or filters to resupply yourself using natural sources of water. Both of these can fail at times. A filter can break or get clogged, and pills can be lost, damaged, or just not effective if the water you start with is too murky.

What you need then, if you want to be fully prepared when entering the wilderness, is a little knowledge, just in case. You need to know how to find safe drinking water, or make it. Here are some tips to remember.

Safe Drinking Water Tips

1. Use your map. See if there are farms or grazing lands or campgrounds upstream from where you are collecting your water. If so, be sure to boil it or use a heavier-than-normal dose of whatever chemical disinfectant you are using. Better yet, collect water somewhere else.

2. Use glacial melt water. If you collect water that is running out from under a glacier or is still near the glacier that it melted from, it is more likely to be safe. No guarantee, but in an emergency, it is likely  better than the water from a cow pasture. If you have chemical purification tablets or a filter, it is more easily purified than muddy water (but allow lots of time for chemical purification of cold water).

3. Look at the surface. If there is a rainbow-colored sheen to the water, it may be toxic. If the color is from natural bacteria which are generally harmless, it will usually break apart when you poke a stick into it. If it doesn’t, it may be petroleum-based, and should be avoided.

4. Smell the foam. Foam on water can be from industrial pollution or detergents, in which case it isn’t really safe drinking water. But if the foam separates easily when disturbed and smells earthy, it is probably natural foam created by the plants in the water and the agitation of the current or waterfalls. In that case it does not indicate toxicity.

5. Look around. If you are near trail crossings or places where people camp, try to collect your water upstream of these areas. If it is a short walk, you may also want to get above any meadow where animals graze.

6. Treat clear water. If the water is murky, your filter may clog or your chemical treatment may not be effective. To solve this problem, let the water settle for a while in any container you have, and then pour off the clearer water after the dirt settles out. You can also strain water through a bandana or t-shirt to get the big stuff out.

In any case, look for the clearest water that is furthest from sources of contamination. Filter, treat with chemicals, boil, or take your chances. Safe drinking water is a necessity, so plan ahead.

Canada Summer Camps: Choosing A Suitable Camp in Canada Jan 28

Most of American summer camps are regulated by a number of independent bodies that are given the job of inspecting and monitoring all aspects of the summer camp. Their role involves looking at safety measures, standards, health and every other regulation that the course and camp must attain in order to stay open.

Sometimes, some camps cannot meet the standards set, and falls short on a number of inspection points then it won’t be permitted to remain in operation. The most common thing to consider is related to the camper’s safety. If you have small children, then you will also want to know that all day camps and play schemes offering full day-care programmes and other facilities for very young children (under the age of eight) have a legal requirement to register with their local department and obtain a certificate in order to operate. If you prefer the option summer camps USA, they are vetted and regularly inspected.

The next question to cover is the price of summer camps for kids and teens. This is also a very common question for parents and those who are going to ultimately be funding the camp experience. A typical type of camp rate for one week may cost about $3500 while some summer camps that last about 8 weeks long will cost somethin $7000. The fee-structure can seem surprisingly high, but these fees will cover all the general activities, medical care, all the food and also laundry.

If your child would like to take part in extra activities, then there may be an extra payment necessary (for things such as field trips and more outdoor activities). Make it clear before you choose a summer camp.

If your kid is looking to attend a camp with a special focus, then it may cost much more than normal. The more in-depth the training and the more specialised the instruction, the more money it will cost. KU summer camps are such worthwhile camp option you can choose .

When one enters St. Peter’s Basilica they might not notice that it is in the shape of a Latin cross, with the dome being in the center of the crossing. The alter, which is in the middle of this Catholic city church, is built directly above the tomb of St. Peter the Apostle, of whom the Bible states that Christ built his church upon. One unique feature of the dome of the Basilica is that Michelangelo nearly finished the drum before his death.

A Vatican City trip can be a very unique experience. One thing that some may not think about when they are planning on entering St. Peter’s Basilica is the fact that a dress code is strictly enforced. The Best Caribbean Cruise to Take Jan 27

Caribbean cruises are offered by a wide variety of cruise lines. It can be difficult to know what the best cruise to take is. Every cruise line offers unique excursions and activities to help make you cruise memorable. Each individual chooses the Caribbean cruise that is best for them based on their interests. let me share with you my thoughts on my favorite cruise? Having been on several cruises I would have to say that my favorite was the Heart of the Caribbean cruise from Royal Caribbean. For eight days and seven nights this cruise offered alot of great activities and excursions! In my opinion it is the best Caribbean cruise.

For eight fabulous and exciting days, the Heart of the Caribbean travels visiting the islands of the Caribbean beginning in San Juan, Puerto Rico.On or off the ship, everyday is a wonderful adventure.

Oranjestad, Aruba is the first place the ship docks. It is located on the southern coast of the Caribbean. “Orangetown” is the Dutch capital of this city in Aruba. You will enjoy the bright and colorful Dutch colonial architecture. Here you can explore the island and see many wonderful sights such as the California Lighthouse by caravan. In Oranjestad many enjoy snorkeling off their beautiful beaches.

The next stop that the ship docks at is off the Venezuelan coast at Willemstad, Curacao. Curacao is the largest and most populated of three “ABC Islands” (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao).  Though it gained autonomy from the Netherlands in 1954 there is still a strong Dutch influence in the culture and architecture. In Willemstad you can explore the Hato Caves and underground lake there. No one should miss this underground world. It’s spectacular. There is also a trolley-train tour that is enjoyable.

You will also stop in Philipsburg, Saint Maarten located in the northeast Caribbean. This particular island has two sides, the French side and the Dutch side. The Dutch side is known for its jewelry, beaches, and festive nightlife. On the French side of the island you can find lots of shops to browse in and the well known nude beaches. The island has numerous duty-free shops and boutiques so shoppers love to come here. Jewelry, leather goods, tobacco, designer clothes are some of the things you find here.

Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands is the last stop for this fabualous cruise. Saint Thomas was purchased by the United States and has so much to offer its visitors. In this location you will find fabulous dining, great shopping, and magnificent white sandy beaches. When in Saint Thomas you will want to stop at the famous Drakes Seat and enjoy the stunning view of Magens Bay.

I’m sure you can see why I think this is the best Caribbean cruise to take. You can enjoy the various onboard activities as well as the many breathtaking stops made which makes this trip truly memorable. All aboard!

How to Find the Best Caribbean Cruise Ship for your Family Jan 25

Finding a Caribbean Cruise Ship for your Family

Keywords: Caribbean Cruise Ship

Years ago cruises were primarily for couples and a few singles. Families are taking cruises together more and more today. To accomodate families the cruise industry has changed quite a bit by providing programs and activites for all ages to enjoy aboard the ship and off the ship. Though some cruise lines have been quicker to respond to this trend than others. In your planning for a family Caribbean cruise vacation you want to be sure that the needs of your whole family will be met by the Caribbean cruise ship. Here are some tips in helping find a Caribbean cruise ship for your family vacation.

The first thing to do is look for a Caribbean cruise ship that is designed with families in mind. This cruise line will have a children’s program that offers a wide variety of activities for children of all ages. You don’t want you children to be bored on a ship where there is nothing for them to do and nowhere for them to go so this is esecially important.  Check into the number of activities the Caribbean cruise ship offers for children and families as this will give you an idea of how much the family is a priority to that particular cruise ship. Others things to check out is how they handle infants and toddlers on the ship and if there is babysitting provided.

The next tip is to look into the dining accommodations. Many parents prefer not to dine in a formal dining room which only provides gourmet food with their little ones every evening. Family friendly cruise ships will have alternate dining arrangements for families with food that children will eat. Usually the ship provides a buffet with lots of menu choices where each member of the family can enjoy a scrumptious meal. Some Caribbean cruise ships have programs that allow children to eat with their youth directors so mom and dad can enjoy the gourmet food in the formal dining hall a night or two.

It would be wise to do some research in order to find a family friendly Caribbean cruise ship so that the whole family will be able to enjoy their cruising vacation.
