Solo Backpacking - Four Reasons, Eight Tips Jan 13

Why solo backpacking? To be honest, one of the reasons I sometimes go alone is simply that it’s tough to find people to go with, especially on short-notice. So reason number one is just the sheer necessity. But that is not the only reason to enter the wilderness by yourself.

Another reason to backpack alone is related to the first: simplicity. For example, if you like to go light, you may have conflicts with friends who want to share the weight of heavy cooking gear and tents. You may prefer cheaper trips, rather than joining others on a flight to some distant locale that isn’t any more beautiful than the trails within hours of you. In other words, you might not want to trade three affordable adventures for one expensive one.

Going solo gives you freedom as well. Even the best hiking partners will not need breaks at the same time, get hungry at the same time, want to hike the same distance each day or do the exact same things. When you’re alone in the wilderness, there is a natural rhythm that can never be there when several people’s needs have to be taken into account, and you are free to follow that rhythm.

Finally, if you have ever wanted to “commune with nature,” or have a more spiritual experience in the wilderness, backpacking solo is the way to go. Most of us cannot help but talk too much when we’re with others. Of course, that scares off wildlife, but it is also true that when alone most people just plain notice the environment more.

Being alone can deepen certain experiences. There is nobody there to define you - just you and the nature around you. If you’ve ever sat quietly and enjoyed a great view, you know that it is a different experience than when you sit there talking with someone about it. And while some friends can sit in silence for long stretches while sharing the sun set or the cloud-shadows passing over the mountains, it isn’t common.

Alone, you begin to realize how entirely indifferent - but not hostile - the wilderness is. Whether you take this trail or that one doesn’t matter to anything or anyone but you. Whether you stay warm or get cold, live or die, is a matter that is mostly irrelevant to everything around you. Yet as a human we are actually equipped to survive here.

On a solo backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevadas, I ate my fill of wild currants at 13,000 feet. As I walked by small lakes the trout scattered. Sunshine warmed me as I took naps on soft grass, and moonlight lit my way during night hikes. It is true that a misstep here or there could lead to death, that lightning could strike me down, or rain could soak me and make me hypothermic. But because of this I pay attention when I am alone out there.

Alone, you become very aware of your surroundings, of the clouds forming in the sky, of any little pain in your foot or back. It is an awareness without worry. This in-the-moment experience is worth having.

Solo Backpacking - Some Tips

Fortunately it has become much safer to get out there alone. This is because of technologies that can turn what would have been a disaster in the past into an inconvenience. Lose your maps? Just turn on the GPS unit on and find the landmark setting for your car to get out. Break your ankle? Turn on the emergency locator beacon or get out your cell phone.

To make it safe without giving up the experience of solitude, then, start by leaving the cell phone charged but off. Don’t allow calls to you and don’t call a soul unless you have a serious problem. As mentioned, a locator beacon is another safety option, but don’t let such safety devices lure you into a false sense of security that gets you into trouble. Leave your basic itinerary with a trusted friend or family member, so they’ll know when to call for a search if you don’t return.

If you have a GPS unit, be sure to “mark” the car or trailhead before hiking in isolated areas - especially in difficult terrain. I recently was in an area where it took three hours (no trails) to travel a bit over a half-mile to the car. Without the GPS it would have been easy to get lost.

Finally, learn some skills to make solo backpacking safer. Being able to make a fire in any conditions is a good place to start. Knowing how to construct a few different kinds of emergency shelters is a good idea too. Also, while food is not usually the first concern in a wilderness emergency, it can’t hurt to be familiar with a few wild edibles. And learn how to treat the most common injuries and illnesses you might encounter out there.

Accommodation Choices in Florida Jan 13

Florida is a tourism hotspot and one of the most popular destinations for holiday makers in North America.  A whopping 85 million visitors take a vacation in Florida each year. The proximity of Florida on the East Coast of the US coupled with it’s sizzling summer temperatures make it a magnet for holiday makers. This makes the accommodation industry in Florida big business, with an estimated 1 million people employed directly.

Below we have outlined the two most popular types of accommodation in Florida.

- Florida Hotels

Hotels are by the far the most popular type of accommodation used in Florida and there are plenty to choose from.  Ranging from the very basic B n B style 2 star hotels right upto more luxurious
5 star hotels.  There are many different types of Florida Hotels to choose from but a typical Cheap Florida Hotel will include a bed, furniture, television and a bathroom.  Don’t worry if there are no restaurant facilities in the hotel where you stay, Florida has plenty of places to eat out!  If you are wishing to stay in a higher rated hotel (4/5 star) you may find additional facilities including spas, gymnasiums, swimming pools, tennis courts and saunas. Some Florida Hotels aside from providing conventional rooms, are now also offering a full suite complete with kitchen facilities.

- Florida Villas

The principal alternative to a booking a hotel is to stay at one of the many superb Florida Villas.   A Villa will typically include separate bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom (s) plus a washing machine and / or a dryer. You will usually pay a fixed price for the length of time that you are there and there will be maximum number of people who can stay. Should you need further places you will probably be charged.  Note that it is unlikely that a Florida Villa will have one bedroom per person.  More often than not a one-bedroom apartment may sleep 2 - 4 people as there will be a fold down sofa in the bedroom and the beds themselves will be double beds.

Get Away From It All With A Luxury Cruise Spa Vacation Jan 13

If you’re sick and tired of going to work every day only to come home to the stresses of family life, with no rest in between, it sounds like you are badly in need of a cruise vacation. Where do you go, however, that will offer complete relaxation? What cruise vacation will leave you totally relaxed and refreshed when you do finally come back to your normal life again?

Well, there are a few options and of on these is a luxury spa cruise vacation package. There are many cruise lines now offering these luxury spa vacation packages and these include Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruises and Costa Cruises to name just three. These vacations will allow you to be pampered, you’ll be waited on hand and foot, you won’t have a care in the world and you’ll be completely relaxed and refreshed. Then, when you finally do return to your normal, everyday life, you’ll be ready to hit the ground running.

When planning your luxury spa cruise vacation, of course you need to keep a few things in mind. You need to know the dates you want to take the cruise and you need to know what price range you’re trying to stay inside of. If you take your luxury spa vacation during peak times, such as spring or summer break, then you should expect most of the luxury spas to be booked up and you should also expect to spend a little bit more than usual. However, if you choose off peak times, you’re sure to have a relaxing luxury spa vacation as not too many people travel during these times. The prices are likely to come down too during these times.

A travel agent is a great way to book a luxury spa cruise vacation as they can help you find the lowest prices. You can also use the internet or you can ask friends and family to see if they have a luxury spa cruise vacation they recommend.

How To Make The Most Out Of Your Cruise Spa Vacation Deal Jan 13

There are so many advertised cruise spa vacation deals on the Internet and in newspapers, that one would have a difficult time assessing which are more advantageous. Many spa resorts give great cheap cruise spa vacation deals during the off-season but they also create better deals during vacation season to attract more clients.

Cruise spa vacation deals sometimes have different rates on weekends and weekdays. There is no difference in the spa’s service for weekdays and weekends but they expect more people on weekends, which is why they also lower their prices on weekdays to entice the others that they cannot accommodate on weekends to stay on other days.

Other booking options may also yield a discount depending on what airlines you get. Many spas have collaborations with airlines regarding clients who use them both. Some cheap cruises give discounted airline rates while some spas give freebies. These are usually bundled together to create more lucrative spa vacation deals for both the spa resort and the travel.

Booking in advance might also get you better spa vacation deals than booking a few days before your intended travel date. Many spas give preference to those who book their treatments in advance but at the same time penalize those who miss them. Make sure that you understand the implications of booking in advance. The spa usually warns those who book in advance regarding missing the booking and giving short notice to change the booking.

Some spa vacation last minute cruise deals may seem very beneficial to the clients but in actuality, many are just the same as getting the treatments off the rack. Thoroughly research the spa that you wish to enter to be able to get the most out of your spa vacation deals. There are a lot of promos that may be hidden or not duly promoted.

Things You Need To Do Before Going On Your Luxury Spa Vacation Jan 13

Going on a spa vacation has many health benefits such as true relaxation, relieving stress and recharging your energy. If you have been overdoing it at work your productivity rate will almost certainly start to drop. Taking a luxury spa vacation will improve your energy level and rejuvenate you on your return.

You will probably find some good shops when you reach your spa resort or destination but the price can be very expensive. Also when you arrive you want the freedom to do as little as possible and also the time to enjoy as many of the treatments as possible. Therefore make sure you write a list of all the items you need to take with you and go to the shops before your trip so all these can be packed away safely in your suitcase.

To really get away from it all, the ideal spa vacation for you would be one that is located in scenic surroundings, far from the hustle and bustle of city life. Cheap cruise spa vacations are a perfect choice for this and many cruise lines such as Celebrity Cruises and Caribbean Cruises regularly offer luxury spa vacation packages and deals.

To make sure your spa vacation is free of interruptions and completely stress free, if at all possible it is ideal to leave your phone and laptop at home. Bringing your work with you on vacation, especially a spa vacation is never a good idea as the idea is to relax and have some time for yourself. You deserve a break away from the stresses and strains of daily life so don’t spoil this by allowing your boss or clients to call you while away. Tell everyone that you are going on vacation and if they wish to talk to you, they will have to wait until you return.

Instead of the cell phone bring that book you have been meaning to read but not had the time and really switch off while enjoying all the pampering and treats a real spa vacation should provide.

Backpacking At Ten Below Zero Jan 13

We were both thirteen years old and backpacking in Michigan without adults (times were different back then). Camping miles from the nearest road, in a single-wall pup tent, we tried not to move too much, because doing so resulted in a shower of icy crystals raining down on us - the frozen condensation from our own breath. When we got up that morning, the thermometer read ten or eleven degrees below zero.

We got out of the tent and everything was glittering with those same crystals, which only seem to form on the coldest days. Jim suggested that we should take off our coats, sweaters and shirts and shake them out. They get flattened by sleeping in them, and this would fluff them up, making them warmer. That was his theory. Soon we were standing there in the snow at ten below with our bare skin turning red.

Fortunately, we were able to dress again before losing the feeling in our fingers. Fluffing up the clothing did help it to trap more air and insulate better, so we warmed up quickly. Probably this would have been a better idea after we had the fire going, but it worked. Add it to your list of ways to stay warm when backpacking, but you might want to do it before you leave your tent (provided it is dry in there). What else can you do to stay warm?

Staying Warm While Backpacking - Six More Ways

1. Stay dry.

Always keep as dry as possible when there is a chance of getting cold. It is always surprising to me how often I see hikers walking right through streams without rolling up their jeans. Given how slowly jeans dry, this usually means being wet when the sun sets. Roll up those pants! Put on your rain pants when walking through dew-covered tall grass and bushes. Dry your wet socks by hanging them on your pack.

2. Have the right clothing.

The jeans mentioned above shouldn’t be part of most backpacking trips. Jeans are too difficult to dry. Good hiking pants made of some type of brushed nylon (nylon that feels soft and comfortable), dry fast. I have seen my pants dry in less than thirty minutes after a good soaking. If the weather calls for long underwear, use polypropylene or some similar material that will stay warm when wet and dry easily. The same goes for other clothing. Avoid cotton.

3. Dress in layers.

Layers of clothing trap more insulating air and keep you warmer. Having more layers rather than one thick coat also means you can more easily adjust for differing conditions. That is important to keep you from sweating. If you sweat too much, the wetness can cause you to get chilled when you stop exerting yourself. Dress in layers, then, and remove them as you warm up.

4. Eat and drink properly.

Hot liquids will warm you up - no surprise there. But many people do not realize that foods are not all equal in their ability to produce heat in our bodies. Fats actually produce heat as they are digested, which is part of the reason that whale blubber is eaten in arctic areas. Army survival courses teach soldiers to eat large chunks of butter to stay warn in winter conditions. For backpacking purposes, you can have olive oil on your pasta or eat oily foods like corn chips to get the same warming effect.

5. Learn how to make and place shelters.

A simple shelter of sticks covered with piles of dry leaves and grass can insulated you and save your life if you are caught out in the winter without a tent. Learning how to make a few of these simple shelters is smart planning for possible emergencies. But even if you have a tent with you, it matters where you set it up. It is normally colder the higher you go, but cold air also collects in the bottoms of valleys at night and into the morning. A level area somewhere in between is best. Try to find a place out of the wind as well.

6. Learn a few tricks for staying warm.

Apart from the basic principles of staying warm during winter backpacking, there are a lot of little tricks you can learn and use. Fully fluffing up a sleeping bag, for example, makes it more effective. Doing sit-ups in your bag before going to sleep gets you a warm start to the night. Some water bottles or canteens can be filled with hot water and kept in the bag with you (some bottles will distort if filled with boiling water). Keeping water bottles inside your clothing during strenuous hiking keeps them warmer, so later you won’t have to drink cold water, which can suck away some of your heat in the evening.

Does Air Travel Make Sense? Jan 13

Pros and Cons of Air Travel

As the decades have passed air travel has continually grown in popularity.  Air travel is convenient and safe and these are the main reasons that have contributed to the increase in popularity of air travel.  The following are some of the positive and negative factors involving air travel.

Disadvantage: Airplanes Cause Pollution.

The major shortcoming of air travel is the pollution caused by it. Emission of greenhouse gases by the airplanes into our atmosphere results in things like global warming.  Global warming increases the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere and people who want to avoid such a rise in temperature are alarmed by this effect.  In order to overcome this problem many airlines nowadays make efforts to become more environmental friendly. One of the ways in which this is achieved by many of these airlines is to retrofit winglet devices that make the aircraft fuel efficient.  In addition, most of the airlines have been modernizing their aircraft to more fuel efficient aircraft by spending a lot of money thereby reducing the emission of greenhouse gases.

Disadvantage: High Cost

One major disadvantage in traveling by air is its cost. In many instances it is inexpensive to travel by car to certain destinations instead of going by air. By flying on discount
airline
it is possible to overcome this disadvantage of high cost. The main deciding factor for flying or driving is the type of deal you can get for airfare.

Disadvantage: Fear of Flying

There are a number of people who just don’t want to fly.  This is mainly because of the fact that they were on a flight that has experienced extreme turbulence or some type of other event and this has been rather terrifying.

Advantage: Speed of Travel

traveling by air is much faster as compared to other means of transportation as long as these places are connected by air. The duration of travel by road between two different places in the United States may be a few days as compared to travel by flight which will take only a few hours. This helps us to enjoy longer vacations because we have to spend less time traveling.

Advantage: Easy to Travel Long Distances

Air travel also allows us to travel to faraway places that would otherwise be too difficult to travel to.  We can pretty much travel to any destination around the globe by air.  Flying to far off destinations takes longer duration; however they are still shorter than the time taken if you had to rely on alternative modes of transportation.

Advantage:  Safety

One of safest mode of travels out of all the forms of travel available is air travel.  We normally hear more about car accidents taking place as compared to air accidents. Similarly, there is no dearth of train accidents. This is not to say that air accidents do not take place; however frequency of such accidents is very small.  Many people decide to travel by air since they feel that it is safer to fly than going by other means of transport.

Choosing air travel is a personal decision, based on the factors discussed above along with a multitude factors not discussed here.  For most travelers safety, speed of travel and cost are the over riding factors.  As long as cost remains affordable air travel will continue to grow in popularity.

What is Time Share? Jan 13

A timeshare is the name given to a part of real estate where a number of mass share ownership in the subject property. As opposed to a regular home where individuals or, for example, a husband and wife share ownership, a timeshare is almost constantly kept by a number of individuals who have no relation to one another whatsoever.

Warm destinations where individuals like to go on vacation, you can find many timeshare properties there. As an example, coastal towns and cities in Florida (Daytona Beach) and South Carolina (Hilton Head Island) are offering a huge numbers of timeshare properties. They can also be found in cold weather regions (ski resorts in Colorado) and all over the world (Ireland, Mexico, Spain) too. Almost each timeshare is located in resorts.

Timeshare props are much more than plain hotel rooms. Typically, they include one to three bedchambers, multiple bathrooms, a full kitchen and a living room. These condominium-style units are almost always fully outfitted. Indoor and outdoor swimming pools are standard at most timeshare properties.

The typical timeshare ownership unit is one week. Timeshare ownership is very similar to that of a condominium except that your ownership is limited to a certain week (or weeks, if you purchase multiple intervals) during the year. If your one-week period of time is in demand, the price will be higher. For Instance, a timeshare for a workweek on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina in April will cost far more than a week at the same resort location in the red-hot heat of August.

Timeshares can be sold or given down to heirs as with other forms of real estate. Numerous people not only look at their timeshare as a way to have a pleasant vacation, but they also consider it as an investment. Should they decide not to use the property for their own usage, they can rent their timeshare to others. Also, the value of many timeshares grows with the passage of years, so long as the destination stays attractive.

Most timeshare deals grant owners to trade and swap locations. An owner in the Bahamas could trade his timeshare for a timeshare in Hawaii. Big hotels like the Marriot International, deal timeshares at holiday resort locations.

Over six million families own timeshare world-wide - many of them are well satisfied with their ownership.

A major force of timeshare is the certainty that it provides. Accommodation (and often leisure facilities) being held in trust (or registered in a public register) for the lifetimelife-time of the right to use. So, provided that you keep on to pay the annual fees on time, you are sure of getting your vacations every year. And when you tired of timeshare you can sell your rights on to someone else.

Truth Telling About Timeshares | Get Timeshare Facts Here and Now Jan 13

HTML clipboardTimeSharePilgrim.com reports that many people buy timeshares as an investment, and so it’s no surprise to see them soon putting the property back on the market. Others use the timeshare for a while and then for some reason, things so that it no longer fits in with their lifestyle–and they also find themselves putting it back on the market. Still others can no longer afford the taxes or maintenance costs. Whatever your reason, selling timeshares is much easier if you remember some important considerations.

1) First, you should understand that people who make a profit on timeshares are the exception rather than the rule. So you should be forewarned ahead of time that, if a profit is what’s holding up the sale, you might be waiting a while. There are profits to be made, but if this is your intent, you need to be sure that when you’re buying the timeshare, you’re getting a bargain deal. Only true timeshare deals stand a chance of earning you a profit.

As an aside to this article, TimeSharePilgrim.com is now offering many free TimeShare reports as well as a complementary subscription to the well known newsletter, The TimeShare Times.  All yours at TimeSharePilgrim.com.

2) Don’t kid yourself when it comes to setting a price. If you’re selling timeshares that are studio units, or if it’s an off-season, you’re not going to make as much money. Likewise, you’ll likely get much less if you haven’t kept up with the maintenance responsibilities on the unit. Sadly, even if your unit is in-season, industry insiders warn that they often will only sell for 30 to 50 percent of the price for which you bought it.

3) You’ll get more money if your timeshare is part of a chain of units.

4) All of the above factors lead to this inevitable conclusion: You’ll have to keep the price low, usually much lower than your buying cost, if you want to sell fast. If you want to make a higher amount, and even make a profit, you need to be in it for the long-haul. This could mean keeping the timeshare on the market for many, many months.

5) You’ll increase your odds of selling high if you list the timeshare in a variety of ways. For instance: Obviously, you want to list it with a real estate agency (Be sure the agency belongs to the American Resort Development Association (ARDA), the trade organization that ensures the agency is not out to scam people like you.

Don’f forget, many many free timeshare reports are yours today at TimeSharePilgrim.com

Proven Tips, Tools and Tactics For Timeshare Success Jan 13

TimeSharePilgrim.com reports that it can be a wise idea to have a timeshare if you purchase in a desirable location, and many timeshare owners are interested in trading points for your location. You also want to consider the time of year your weeks fall into. For instance, the weeks surrounding the Christmas holiday in a popular resort are more desirable, than a non-holiday week in the middle of no-wheres-ville. Get the point? Be on the lookout and careful about timeshare resale scams that have been onthe rise for sometime now. You own a timeshare resort. In the course of time its maintenance cost has become burdensome for you. To add to your woes, your timeshare vacation week does not fit into your lifestyle anymore. You just want to sell it as quickly as possible! But do you think to sell a timeshare is that easy? It can be as long as you know several things: 1. What is the current timeshare real estate market for sellers. 2. How precious do buyers consider your vacation week. 3. How competive is your resort compared to other timeshare developments around the world. Remmber, you are competing with potential buyers from around the world.

The timeshare industry has been ripe for scammers. In some case scammers may even provide copies of agreement contracts as proof to potential buyers. So, just be aware that there are scams out there and be on the guard before you sign anything. When a person is going to purchase a timeshare, charges depend on the time of the year, since premium prices are present for the most favorable time of the year. Many people buy timeshares as an investment, and so it’s no surprise to see them soon putting the property back on the market. Why? Perhaps looking at a timeshare as an investment is not the best way of approaching the transaction. Maybe a better way of approaching a timeshare purchase is looking at it more of an alternative vacation plan. More and more people are finding that there are many timeshare deals to be found online — especially in online auctions.

Others use the timeshare for a while and then for some reason, it no longer fits in with their lifestyle — and they also find themselves putting their vacation unit back on the market. The timeshare resorts are separated into units, which are intervals, points or credits. The timeshare business has developed over the last decade and has become a more popular alternative for vacationers globally. Offering a practically endless portfolio of resort choices, the timeshare industry has finally come into its own.

In recent years, timeshare resorts have become hosts to many family and class reunions. Why? Several resons:

1. The resort developments are typically located in areas where people would like to visit.

2. The resorts know this and are designed with facilities and venues to accomodate large groups of people.

3. Usually it is easy to find attractive room rates because many timeshare owners are happy to rent their units to offset their expenses.
