Package holidaymakers have been visiting the small Canary Island of Lanzarote ever since the 1970´s. When the island first started to appear in the brochures of tour operators in the UK and across Europe. Its popularity sealed by its breathtaking beaches and equally wonderful weather. But this popular destination offers more than sea, sun and sand. As careful development has created a largely unspoilt holiday island.
Much like other islands in the Canaries there is a pronounced north-south divide on Lanzarote. With tourist development and the main resorts confined to the south – which enjoys the best of the weather. Whilst the north remains the domain of the locals, with less development and a cooler climate.
Over the last ten years package holiday makers have been augmented by independent travellers. As a result of the growth of budget airlines and the internet. Which has enabled tourists to book their own travel and accommodation online. As a result this trend has in turn increased demand for apartments and villas in Lanzarote. Which are now booked in preference to hotels and all inclusive holiday deals. With many British tourists booking holiday villas in Playa Blanca – the islands fastest growing resort - direct with the owners.Accommodation details on Playa Blanca villas is available here
Outside the large resorts in the south there is an unspoilt island with a strong agricultural past. A well as loads of off the beaten track attractions. All of which are best explored by booking a car and heading out on tour.
One of the best ways to connect with this side of the island is to drive to Haria, a picture perfect village which has been described by a well known Canarian author as the prettiest pueblo on the island if not the world. Whilst the latter may be little wide of the mark Haria is certainly a real green gem – as it is much more verdant than the south of the island and boasts much more in the way of flora and fauna as a result. Helped along by the locals who also plant a Canarian palm for every new baby in the village – a tradition which now dates back for many centuries.
From Haria it is just a short drive to the coastal village of Arrieta. Which is home to one of the few beaches on this side of Lanzarote to have escaped development. Soak up the great views and the sun here from one of the restaurants that are located right on the sand.
