Hurghada is a coastal city with a vast 25 mile stretch of coastline of white sandy beaches, which is fringed by palm trees and lapped by clear azure waters, which are home to an abundance of marine life. It is the most popular resort in the Red Sea and its array of varied attractions attracts visitors year after year, not to mention its lively restaurants, bars, shops, world-class hotels and choice of watersports.
Just a five hour flight away, Hurghada can be found hugging the Egyptian shoreline of the Red Sea. This active resort can be divided into three very different main sections of El Dahar, Sekala and Al Ahiaa. El Dahar, or Downtown as it is also known, is the area’s eldest region which is reflected in its architecture and general ambience. This bustling section is the traditional heart of the city and home to most of the indigenous folk, with many cafes, restaurants and street vendors offering the sumptuous local cuisine.Heady flavours and spices fill the air but beware the agreement that some taxi drivers may have with certain shops or the promise of free gifts before you enjoy the vitality of the town’s largest bazaar. The accommodation here is well located for the lively attractions and nightlife with five star complexes overlooking the beach and a number of value hotels in the area for travellers passing through.
Sekala is a vibrant district, filled with shopping opportunities, international clubs, restaurants and bars - and also the Hotel Zone along the coastline and new promenade, which features many luxury beachfront resorts. The city centre itself is located just South of Downtown, towards the international airport, and just next to Hurghada’s old harbour. This lively district also has great travel links to other main resorts.
Just South of Sekala you will find Al Ahiaa, along the coastal road. It is the newest and most modern district, and, in stark contrast to El Dahar, it has been developed to cater for all-inclusive resorts and more up-to-date structures. The most progressive area of growth for hotels, holiday villages and complexes, Al Ahiaa is expanding to meet its needs as it becomes more popular, and you will find a range of shops, restaurants and entertainment throughout the day and night.
Like most of the Red Sea resorts, Hurghada is well-known for its wide range of watersports including kite surfing, windsurfing and deep-sea fishing, along with sailing and waterskiing but mainly specialising in diving and snorkelling off the coral reefs. There are daily trips to the world-renowned main dive sites including offshore atolls such as the famous Giftun Island. Other activities available include exploring the vast landscape of the Eastern Arabian Desert with horse back and camel riding, trekking and desert safaris, or taking excursions to visit the ancient sites of the Monasteries of St. Anthony and St. Paul or the world’s largest open air museums of Luxor.
